In Homer's 3,000 year-old epic Greek tale, the Iliad, Helen of Troy is known as the woman whose face launched a thousand ships, sending ancient Sparta to war against Troy. Compared to Helen of Troy, Hélène Champlain is a little known footnote in Canadian history. All the young wife of Samuel de Champlain wanted was the freedom to make her own choices. In Ed Schroeter's compelling new historical fiction, Birch Bark and Silk Damask, Hélène's simple wish to found a haven for religious freedom in New France sets in motion a series of events that throws her into the centre of a raging storm of power politics, desire, and male ego.

Suitable for Grades 3 to 12 and families.
