In 1838, a year after the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837, Peterborough is divided in the wake of this social upheaval.
Dr. John Gilchrist, a New Hampshire immigrant, was a Reformer and a Loyalist. He embraced Britain and its institutions, while at the same time supported democratic and social reforms which he considered necessary to solve the plight of his countrymen.
John Darcus was a Tory, a newspaper publisher, and a militiaman. He was terrified that power would pass into the hands of the "ignorant masses", who would destroy British institutions and bring Upper Canada to ruin. Which man was the true patriot?
This is a timeless story about the evolution of democracy.
"This play offers a unique insight into the politics of 19th Century Ontario and a reminder that too often all that stands between our rights and privileges is an honest citizen. ...It is scheduled to return ... and when it does, be sure to see it if you can. The price is right. And if you take a child, you'll get a whole new slant on how Canada grew to be what it is today."
